The P-47 Thunderbolt was principal World War II fighter plane known for its speed, durability, and reliability. The plane had a profound effect on combat, and it become the first American fighter to accompany Flying Fortress and Liberator bombers on roundtrip flights to Germany.
Republic Aviation Corporation helped resurrect Evansville’s faltering economy after April 7, 1942 when it opened a plant to manufacture the plane. Over 5,000 men and women - including African Americans and physically handicapped - manufactured 6,242 P-47 Thunderbolts from 1942-1945. Evansville's wartime efforts, including the manufacturing of both planes and ammunition, brought 25,000 permanent citizens to Vanderburgh County, representing a switch from Depression to prosperity.
