What Evansvillian hasn’t uttered the phrase, “Back in my day, monkeys played on this ship!” The monkeys may be elsewhere, but the whimsically iconic Monkey Boat can still be viewed today at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden. In 1933, Gilmore Haynie commissioned the project, a 1/3 scale Santa Maria, and its construction was completed by WPA workers. Years later, in the best interest of animal health, the exhibit was transformed into a bumper boats attraction. Today it’s fun to reminisce about memories made at the zoo, and to tell non-native Evansvillians that yes, there really did used to be monkeys on the ship!
