In history, occasional years are referred to as "Year of Miracles". In the midwest, 1811 was just that. Between the Great Comet being visible, earthquakes, and a total eclipse, midwesterners were worried for good reason. But it was also said that during the summer of 1811 into the fall and winter, animals acted strangely; without fear of humans.

Southern Indiana was a hardwood forest in 1811, so there were far greater numbers of woodland animals including squirrels. But that particular year the squirrels not only acted strangely, but seemed all the more plentiful as they made a mass southerly migration. As poor swimmers, the squirrels were piling in the rivers in such staggering numbers that they became a pest, and thus a major food source for Native Americans.

The natural phenomenons are said to possibly be cause for the squirrels' mass migration and strange behaviors, but it's no wonder hoosiers were worried about their fate that year.
