Funky's, located at 18 S. Third Ave., produced more memories than most businesses in Evansville ever will. After all, it was nothing for the discotheque bar – which opened in 1975 – to serve upwards of 10,000 beers (and just as many mixed drinks) each week. The 1,500-person crowd on most weekends danced in the 14,000-square-foot building under strobes and disco balls, experiencing what founder Robert Folz coined “the magic in the mingle.” The disco-dance chapter of over one-hundred-thousand visitors' lives ended when the final song played at the bar in March 1980, just as disco was also on its way out the door.
